Critical Thinking & Cultural Affirmation.
The pioneering behavior transformation and community mobilization framework — the spine of every BMX program, and the only intervention of its kind.

Two inputs. One transformation.
A culturally-informed intervention that empowers Black people through critical thinking, self-affirmation, and responsible decision-making — reducing high-risk behavior while confronting race-based self-concept dilemmas, societal pressure, and internalized oppression. Developed by Cleo Manago through AmASSI Health & Cultural Centers.
Rooted in Social Cognitive Theory, CTCA weaves protective, proactive, and adaptive racial socialization into one practice — mental, sexual, and community health met through peer leadership, cultural literacy, and lower stigma around care.
improvement in self-concept & reduction in high-risk behavior among participants across two decades of implementation.
What CTCA asks of us.
Critical Thinking
Interrogate the ideas, systems, and language handed to us — whose interests, at what cost.
Cultural Affirmation
Center African/Black cultural knowledge as identity, resilience, and design for right living.
Self-Determination
Define ourselves on our own terms — from reaction to declaration.
